Dog Training Pro Masterclass: From Basic Commands to Advanced Tricks

Training your dog strengthens your bond, keeps them safe, and makes life together more enjoyable. This masterclass walks you from foundational commands to advanced tricks, with clear steps, training schedules, and troubleshooting tips you can apply at home.

Why structure matters

A consistent, progressive approach builds your dog’s confidence and skills. Start with short, frequent sessions (5–10 minutes, 2–3 times daily), use high-value treats or praise, and always end on a positive note.

Equipment and setup

  • Leash and flat collar or harness
  • Clicker (optional)
  • Small, soft treats (easy to chew)
  • Quiet training area with minimal distractions
  • Notebook to track progress

Foundational skills (Weeks 1–3)

These commands establish control and communication.

  1. Sit

    • Hold a treat above the dog’s nose, move it back over their head. When the rear lowers, say “Sit,” mark (click or say “Yes!”), and reward.
    • Repeat 5–10 reps per session. Fade the lure over 1–2 weeks.
  2. Down

    • From sit, hold a treat at the floor between their front paws and move it away. When they lie down, mark and reward.
    • Practice 3–5 minutes per session; build duration gradually.
  3. Come (Recall)

    • Use a long leash. Crouch, show treat, say “Come” in an excited voice, and gently reel in if needed. Reward lavishly when they reach you.
    • Train in low-distraction places first. Never punish on recall.
  4. Leave It

    • Place a treat in both fists. Show one closed fist; when the dog stops sniffing and backs away, mark and reward from the other hand.
    • Progress to dropped items on the floor and higher-value temptations.
  5. Loose Leash Walking

    • Start in a quiet area. Reward the dog for staying by your side. Stop when they pull; resume walking when slack returns. Use frequent treats initially.

Intermediate skills (Weeks 4–8)

Build reliability and add duration and distance.

  • Proofing commands: practice sit/down/come in new places, with distractions, and off-leash where safe.
  • Duration: increase time holding a command before reward (aim for 2–5 minutes).
  • Distance: give commands from farther away, starting with leash and moving to voice only.
  • Place/mat training: teach the dog to go to a mat and stay until released. Useful for guests or mealtimes.
  • Controlled greetings: have the dog sit before meeting people; reward calm behavior.

Advanced tricks (Weeks 9+)

Once obedience is solid, introduce fun, mentally stimulating tricks.

  1. Shake/Paw

    • From sit, lift one paw gently, say “Shake,” mark and reward. Fade assistance as they offer paw.
  2. Play Dead

    • From down, lure the dog onto their side with a treat, add cue “Bang” or “Play dead,” mark and reward when fully on their side.
  3. Spin/Twirl

    • Hold a treat near the nose and move in a circle; say “Spin” as they follow. Reward at the end of the spin.
  4. Weave Between Legs

    • Use treats to guide the dog through your legs while walking slowly; mark each successful weave and build fluid motion.
  5. Retrieve Specific Items

    • Teach item names one at a time (e.g., “Ball”). Show item, name it, reward when they touch it, then when they pick it up and bring it to you.

Troubleshooting common issues

  • Stubbornness: shorten sessions, increase reward value, ensure no pain or medical issue.
  • Regression: reduce distractions, go back a step, reinforce basics.
  • Overexcitement: work on impulse control—“sit,” “wait,” and mat training help.
  • Fear/anxiety: use desensitization and counterconditioning; consult a professional for severe cases.
