How to Set Up a MultiPrinter Port in Windows and macOS
Overview
A “MultiPrinter Port” here means a network/shared printer connection that allows multiple printers or multiple clients to send jobs via the same logical network/print port (e.g., standard TCP/IP, LPR/LPD, IPP), or a port configured to load-balance/send jobs to different physical devices. Below are prescriptive steps for both Windows and macOS, plus testing and troubleshooting.
Windows (Windows 10 / 11)
-
Open Settings / Control Panel
- Settings: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Or Control Panel: Devices and Printers.
-
Add a printer
- Click Add device / Add a printer or scanner. Wait — if Windows finds the printer you want, select it and follow prompts.
- If it doesn’t appear, choose The printer that I want isn’t listed.
-
Add a printer using TCP/IP or hostname
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and click Next.
- Enter the device’s IP address or hostname. For a multi-printer gateway appliance, enter the appliance IP.
- Uncheck “Query the printer and automatically select the driver” if you plan to install a specific driver manually.
-
Choose the device type / port
- Windows will create a new Standard TCP/IP Port. For advanced multi-printer setups (load-balancer/gateway), use the appliance IP and the protocol required (RAW/9100, LPR, IPP).
- For LPR, click Custom > Settings to set queue name and LPR byte counting if needed.
-
Install drivers
- Choose the correct driver from the list or click Have Disk to provide vendor drivers. Use 64-bit or 32-bit drivers matching your OS.
- Give the printer a descriptive name.
-
Share or set as default
- Optionally share the printer on the network (Control Panel > Printer properties > Sharing).
- If multiple physical printers are behind the same port/appliance, configure the appliance’s queue mapping or use the vendor utility to route jobs.
-
Advanced configuration (if using a multi-printer gateway)
- Use the manufacturer’s tool to map logical queues to physical printers, set failover/load balancing, or configure protocols (IPP, RAW).
- For print servers, configure security (IP restrictions, TLS/HTTPS for IPP), and authentication if needed.
-
Test
- Print a test page (Printer properties > Print Test Page).
- Send a multi-page job and confirm it routes correctly to the intended device.
macOS (Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur — recent versions)
-
Open System Settings
- System Settings > Printers & Scanners (or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on older macOS).
-
Add a printer
- Click Add (+) button below the printers list.
- If the printer appears, select it and follow prompts.
-
Add by IP
- Click the IP tab.
- Protocol: choose Line Printer Daemon – LPD, Internet Printing Protocol – IPP, or HP Jetdirect – Socket (for raw
